Classes for Section Conclave 2009

These are the classes that are will be offered at Section Conclave. There are 3 colleges and one elective school. They are as described below.

CEDA

Devil's Tower School of Ceremony and Dance (CEDA) - In recognition to the famous Devil's Tower in Northeastern Wyoming, the Devil's Tower School of Ceremony and Dance builds a foundation for beginning to advanced OA Ceremonialists and Dancers. Professors experienced in such things as acting, appearance, and meaning are able to provide Arrowmen with a plethora of knowledge to progress in their favorite areas of interest. These courses are all open to Conclave goers of all ages but be honest with your level or experience in choosing which ones to attend.

09:00 AM CEDA 101B Introduction to Ceremonies This class is perfect for the beginning ceremonialist. This class will highlight how to learn and memorize lines, how to build a team, and give you the tools to avoid many of the pitfalls of a beginner ceremonialist.
10:00 AM CEDA 102C Intro to Native Beadwork This class takes up two sessions and will teach you the basics of Native American bead work. Everything will be provided and you will be able to create your own bead art by the end of the session. There will be a small extra fee for all participants to cover the cost of materials payable to the instructor of the class.
09:00 AM CEDA 103B Introduction to Native American Dance This class will cover the basics of Native American dance including basic dance steps, powwow / dance etiquette, and the 3 main styles of Native American Dance. If you would like to compliment this class, it is recommended, though not required, that you take Introduction to Pow-ow Drumming and Singing in the 10 am training slot as well.
11:00 AM CEDA 104D Make and learn to play your own Native American flute. Build a simple Native American flute from PVC pipe. They're not pretty, but they seem to play pretty well and it's something you can easily do.
10:00 AM CEDA 105C Introduction to Pow-Wow Drumming and Singing If you’ve ever been to a powwow, or even if you haven’t, one of the most fun things you can do other than dancing is to sit around the drum and sing! This class will teach you the basics of both powwow drumming and singing so the next time you are at a powwow YOU can participate on the drum!
09:00 AM CEDA 108B Inductions: Elections through Call Out This class will explain the process of inducting new members into our Order from planning and training for Unit Elections all the way through the Call Out Ceremony.
11:00 AM CEDA 201D How to Make Great Regalia This class will help you learn how to make your own set of regalia. We will discuss methods of researching your regalia and how to make an outfit that is both good looking and affordable.
11:00 AM CEDA 203D Intermediate Ceremonies This class goes deeper into the ceremonies. We will look at symbolism in the pre-ordeal and ordeal ceremonies and work on more advanced performance techniques.
10:00 AM CEDA204C The Ceremonialist As An Actor This class is intended to help you as a ceremonialist to learn advanced acting techniques when performing a ceremony from the perspective of how an actor learns to play their role. It will cover topics such as connecting with your audience, projecting yourself, and transforming into your part when performing.
11:00 AM CEDA205D Inductions: Ordeal through Brotherhood This class focuses on the induction process of the Ordeal weekend with the Elangomat’s role, the Pre-Ordeal, the Ordeal ceremony, and Jumpstart. After that it will cover what should be done in the next year to retain the newly elected members and assist them in obtaining their Brotherhood in 10 months.
10:00 AM CEDA206C The Vigil Selection Process (open to everyone) Ever wonder how Vigils are seemingly “magically” selected? Want to know how the real Vigil selection process works? This class will cover the selection process for the Vigil Honor, from nominations up to the Ceremony, as well as briefly explaining how one may be considered worthy of the Vigil Honor. You need-not be a Vigil to take this class, it is open to everyone.
10:00 AM CEDA 301C “Special” Ceremonies of the Order of the Arrow This class will cover some of the lesser known ceremonies in the Order of the Arrow. We will cover the rules and guidelines of the ceremonies and show you good and bad examples of the Eagle, Arrow of Light, Call Outs, Broken Arrow, and other ceremonies Arrowmen have been known to perform over the years.
09:00 AM CEDA 303B Native Tribes local to the Denver area This class will give a history of the Native American tribes in the Denver and surrounding areas as well as covering some of their customs and traditions and how you may be able to incorporate that into your Lodge and ceremonies.
09:00 AM CEDA 304B Advanced Ceremonies This class is for ceremonialists who have already preformed in Lodge level ceremonies and who are interested in refining their techniques and perfecting all aspects of being a top notch ceremonialist. This class is great for preparing one for ceremonial competition on the Section and National levels.

SLP

Mt. Rushmore School of Leadership and Program (SLP) - In Honor of four outstanding U.S. Presidents and leaders, the Mt. Rushmore School of Leadership and Program is an opportunity for Youth to become better leaders by providing them with the tools and skills to develop wisdom while keeping Adults in their proper role as Advisors by giving them faith in their Scouts. Be sure to sign up in classes specific to your age and ability.

10:00 AM SLP 101C Communications Throw everything you think you know about communicating out the window. We start with the basic communication skills a leader needs to be successful and effective. This fun class will break anti-social barriers and make you want to relearn the English language. This class is special because it is the only time a class will be allowed to constantly contradict and make fun of the professor.

09:00 AM SLP 104B How to Make Chapter Meetings FUN “Why doesn’t anybody come to our Chapter Meetings?” This is a common problem many Chapters face, and this class is designed to help revitalize your Chapter by helping you add more events and activities that will make meetings more fun and make members want to come back for more!
10:00 AM SLP 105C Leadership Opportunities in The OA Do the words Lodge, Chapter, Section, Vice Chief, Council, District, Area, and Region confuse you? Do you want to learn about the basic structure of the Order of the Arrow and Scouting above the Troop level? This class answers all of that and more, and explains the many opportunities YOU can have serving your fellow Scouts in this organization on many different levels.
11:00 AM SLP 106D I Got My Brotherhood, Where Is the Coffee? Sorry, getting your Brotherhood doesn’t give you the right to just sit around and drink coffee at Lodge events, but what does it give you? This class will help you understand exactly what the Brotherhood is, and how you can use it to help your Lodge, Chapter, and fellow Arrowmen.
09:00 AM SLP 109B The Power Of One This was the theme from last summer’s National Order of the Arrow Conference, and will help you learn how YOU can use the Power of One to make a difference in those around you.
09:00 AM SLP 110B Lodge Traditions: Good, Bad, and Other… We all have ‘em: Traditions in our Lodge, some are good and make your Lodge stand out, but others may be preventing your Lodge from being the best it can be. This class will talk about why we have traditions, how to tell if you’re Lodges traditions are good or potentially bad, and how to address this in your Lodge without disrespecting or offending anybody.
11:00 AM SLP 206D Leadership Outside the OA There has been quite a lot of emphasis in our organization on how to be a great leader within the OA and Scouting, but this class will help you find ways to become a better leader in your school, work place, sports team, and other organizations by discovering common traits any leader should have whether in uniform or not.
10:00 AM SLP 207C Reaching out to Units Sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints One area many Lodges need improvement on is getting more participation from Latter Day Saints (LDS) Units in their Councils. This class will explain the basics of the structure of the LDS Church and its Scouting Units, and will give ideas and resources you can use to help gain support and ultimately more participation from our LDS brothers.
11:00 AM SLP 208D Adviser’s Roundtable This is less like a class and more like an open forum for all Advisers on the Chapter and Lodge level. Here you can discuss common challenges you face and hopefully hear solutions from others in the room who have encountered similar problems before. And don’t worry, there will be coffee!
11:00 AM SLP 209D Lodge and Chapter Youth Officers Roundtable (Youth Only) This is less like a class and more like an open forum for all youth officers on the Lodge and Chapter level. Here you can discuss common challenges you face and hopefully hear solutions from others in the room who have encountered similar problems before. (And don’t worry, this is only for youth officers under 21 years old, the Advisers have their own meeting during the same time!)
09:00 AM SLP 211C How to Train Without Using Powerpoint or Electricity Do all your Lodge training events feel the same? Are you always crowded into a room and forced to stare at a projector and listen to someone speak for hours on end? This class will show you some long forgotten ancient training techniques used many years ago before computers took over training to help spice up your Lodge events and make training more diverse and enjoyable for your members.
10:00 AM SLP 212C I’m A Has-been, Now What!? So…You blew out the 21 candles on your birthday cake, and now you’re wondering what you can do as an Arrowmen…But you still feel too young to sit around and drink coffee talking about the good ol’ days. This class will offer ways that will help your transition into the “Adviserhood” and show how you can still help the organization and other Arrowmen.
09:00 AM SLP 213B The Boys In Blue Are Our Future! It’s True! Cub Scouts are the future of the Scouting movement and the Order of the Arrow. Learn new ways to reach out to Cub Scouts as an Arrowman and how you can leave a positive lasting impact on those Cub Scouts who look up to you.
09:00 AM SLP 304B Teamwork: How to Work Together as an Adviser and Youth This class is for both youth officers and adult Advisers. It will help the two of you better understand your individual roles and jobs, and it will also help the two of you discover ways to improve communications and better understand how to work as a professional team.
10:00 AM SLP 307C Working With YOUR Council Professionals and Volunteers As part of the 2008-2012 Strategic Plan, Lodges must be more “responsive and flexible in meeting the needs of their Council.” This class will help you understand what role your Lodge should play in support of the Council, and how to work with both Professional and Volunteer members in your Council for a mutual benefit to both programs.
11:00 AM SLP 309D Opportunities Outside the Section Ever wonder what a NOAC is? Wanna learn about OA Staff opportunities at the upcoming 100th Anniversary BSA Jamboree? This class talks about all the possibilities that the Order of the Arrow has on the Region, National, and even International level in the upcoming years that you can take advantage of.

HACS

Hornaday School of Conservation and Service (HACS) - A new school to a new Section, the Hornaday School of Conservation and Service is based on the ideas and principles of Dr. William T Hornaday. It provides Lodges with understanding of the Boy Scouts of America's new commitment to being the leading Youth-led organization in the outdoor spirit of service. The Front Range is an area full of Conservation concerns that we must be aware of since we are those that dwell near and depend upon it as our source of life.

09:00 AM HACS 104B Planning a Lodge or Chapter Service Project This class will cover the basics from beginning to end to help your Chapter or Lodge plan a service or conservation project. It will include ideas taken from the 2008 Arrow Corps 5 Service projects to make the participants and planning staff feel even more accomplished even after the project is finished.
10:00 AM HACS 105C Camping Promotions This class will help you discover new ways to reach out to units in and even out of your Council and promote your Council’s camps. You will learn various sales techniques as well as some effective promotion methods to help get the word out and get Scouts to camp!
09:00 AM HACS 204B Planning for the Hornaday Conservation Award The Hornaday Conservation Award has been around over 90 years, yet only a little over 1000 Scouts have earned the prestigious award. This class will explain the requirements for the Hornaday Silver Award in depth, and it will help you find resources to guide you along the way if you choose to pursue the Hornaday.
11:00 AM HACS 205D The OA and Summer Camp This class will help you find ways that OA members on Summer Camp staff can make a positive experience for Arrowmen attending summer camps and energize them about all the exciting opportunities there are in the Order. If you’re thinking about working on Camp Staff this summer, this class if for YOU!
11:00 AM HACS 206D Backpacking Tips from a Philmont Hike Ranger As Arrowmen, we’re all honor campers, but the Arrowman teaching this course is one of the best! Here you will learn backpacking tips from an Arrowman who spent his entire summer as a Hike Ranger at Philmont, Scouting’s National Backpacking High Adventure Base. This class is highly recommended for anyone who may be attending Philmont or going on a long term backpacking trip in the near future, or for anyone who just wants to improve their outdoor backpacking skills!
10:00 AM HACS 207C Canoeing Tips From a Northern Tier Interpretor Forget everything you learned about canoeing on that small lake at summer camp all those years ago. This class is taught by an Arrowman who spent his entire summer up North in the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area in a canoe as an Interpreter at the Northern Tier National BSA Canoe Base! This class is highly recommended for anyone who may be attending Northern Tier or taking a canoe trip in the near future, or for anyone who just wants to learn more about canoeing.

ECR

Elective (Not an OA Accredited College) (ECR) - As any Scout would believe, Scouting is an organization in which youth become leaders by learning skills that are enjoyable. The Elective School of Cheerful Recreation (ECR) is an opportunity for every Scout and Scouter to take a break from the other Schools and do and learn something fun. You CAN NOT Major in this although I know some might like to. DO NOT choose this school as your Major.

09:00 AM ECR 103D How To Iron and Care for Your Scout Uniform like a National Officer If you’ve ever been to a National event and seen all those guys with gold epaulettes, or even just seen your Section Chief walking around, you can’t help but admire their uniform with its perfect creases and spotless appearance. This class will help you treat your uniform with the respect it deserves, and you will learn how to correctly iron and care for it. Your mother will be so proud when you are finally able to care for your uniform all by yourself!
09:00 AM ECR 201B Wilderness First Aid The Scout Motto is “Be Prepared”, but what do you do when you are hours away from help and somebody requires immediate medical attention? This wilderness first aid course will help you learn the skills that could save a life out in the backcountry or even at home some day.
